How we choose the DVD Drive
Quick review of DVD/CD Drive technology
Playing and recording video, audio and even data on DVD drives has become
ever more mainstream. With the ability to read, write and rewrite files, DVD
drives have sent the venerable floppy disk drive into almost obsolescence.
Compatibility with multiple media formats is important. Many DVD drives are
compatible with both the formats DVD+R/+RW and DVD-R/-RW, but it's
better to be additionally compatible with the DVD-RAM format. Dual layer
(DL) DVD writing capability gives you more storage. We also need our DVD
drive to be CD compatible with CD-R/-RW formats.
Blu-ray Disc (BD) format is not at a mainstream price yet in our opinion, so
we can exclude it for now. As long as you have a spare drive bay, one can
always be added later if needed. Then you will have two DVD drives so you
can transfer files directly from DVD to DVD.
Speed of the DVD drive is important in both reading, recording and also
access times. A Serial ATA (SATA) connector is now current tech, compared
with the earlier IDE interface.
