How we choose Computer Speakers
Quick review of Computer Speaker technology
While speakers built into a monitor may be a functional option, we are
looking for an audio experience better than that. Audio sources on the
computer from music, movies, games, video, and even Voice over Internet
Protocol are ever more mainstream today. Quality audio is a joy. External
speaker technology can deliver this.
In one technology, digital audio streams are converted to analog signals by a
digital analog converter (DAC) inside the computer. Analog is the signal we
hear. This conversion inside the computer can result in a loss of quality,
because of 'noise' from other components in the computer. Also, one may
need to incur the cost of a separate sound card instead of using integrated
audio to ensure a quality DAC.
In another technology that we prefer, an external digital speaker system
with its own DAC, takes the digital audio stream from the computer, and
makes the conversion to analog inside the external speakers!
